The challenges in keeping it simple
The more I learn, explore, and meet new people, one thing that becomes increasingly apparent to me is that I derive the most happiness, growth, and fulfillment from doing simple things consistently. But the challenge lies in maintaining consistency in a world filled with countless distractions and options that grab my attention with short bursts of intense excitement—these can be addictive but ultimately leave me unfulfilled in the long run.
This applies to everything I do, from my workout routine and dietary choices to my clothing preferences and purchases.
Over the past couple of years, much of my life has revolved around simplifying things, decluttering my existence, and appreciating the everyday normalcy. By "simple things," I mean being able to stick to a basic daily workout, consume healthy food, engage in meaningful work, and surround myself with the right people. Achieving this still requires a considerable amount of discipline, which I often struggle with. The days when I manage to wake up early, complete my workout, and eat healthily are noticeably richer and more fulfilling than those when I allow discipline to slip.
"Freedom is just another side of discipline," and this statement rings truer with each passing day. Even while writing this blog, I found myself distracted twice by notifications on my phone, highlighting the challenges of maintaining consistency in a world brimming with opportunities and information. It underscores the importance of occasionally disconnecting from our devices to allow time for basic activities, boredom, and creativity.
I don't usually experience boredom, but I frequently feel frustrated because I let myself be drawn into the weaponry of social media, preventing me from engaging in simple yet essential tasks. As I age, the amount of time available to me each day seems to diminish. New commitments, responsibilities, and tasks demand more of my time, and failing to maintain discipline leads me to neglect simple activities, such as working out, regular meals, and sufficient sleep. These neglects can compound, just as good habits do, leading to negative consequences like poor health, debt, and dissatisfaction.
Initially, I began writing this blog to explore the simplicity of happiness. However, through self-reflection, I realized how challenging it has become to keep things simple in today's world. This brings me to the broader question: How do we consistently simplify our lives?
