Why am I trying to adopt Minimalism?
You can never get enough of what you don’t want.
The quote from the documentary Minimalism has stayed with me since I watched it.
Minimalism is a philosophy of living by possessing only the things that are truly needed and only buying things that could make you more productive or provide valuable experiences.
Often, we realize that many things we own add no value or happiness to our life. On the contrary, the more stuff you have, the more mental and physical space it acquires, leaving less room for meaningful things, things that enrich your life and provide lasting happiness.
Ever since taking cognizance of this philosophy, I could identify many things I own but never actually use.
Recently I decided to apply this philosophy to my wardrobe. There were a lot of clothing items in my wardrobe that I had not worn in more than a year, just lying there, occupying valuable space and cluttering it. So I decided to take out all of these items, and give them to the person who truly needs them. In the process, I found the running shorts I thought I had lost, the one clothing item I use every week.
This simple exercise saved me time, money, and space; saving the time spent searching the lost item, saving the money needed to buy a new one, and freed space in the closet for more important things.
Minimalism aligns well with my desire to lead a sustainable lifestyle. The less stuff I buy, the lesser would be my carbon footprint.
Minimalism also aligns with my financial goals. Knowing how much is enough gives a lot of opportunities to save more money.
Money’s greatest dividend is the autonomy it provides you to do what you want when you want and where you want. - Morgan Housel
The money I do not spend would generate more savings, the savings I can use to invest and buy myself the greatest asset of time. The time that I can cherish doing the things like travelling, exploring, and pursuing my hobbies.
So it makes sense for me to adopt Minimalism, as it perfectly aligns with how I want to lead my life and the fact that it keeps me aware of what is actually important in my life. I have just started this journey of Minimalism and look forward to its positive changes in my life.
